Community Outreach with Off-Campus Housing Services

Ashley Royer, Off-Campus Housing Coordinator, Housing & Ancillary Services, aroyer@housing.uwo.ca

Western's Off-Campus Housing Service strives to engage students in the off-campus community through City bylaw education and neighbourhood involvement. Utilizing community programs, adherence to City bylaws is promoted through active student participation. Students can earn volunteer hours or simply benefit from the Adopt-a-Street program, Winter Houses or the annual Furniture Depot.

By voluntary participation in the Adopt-a-Street program, Western students help keep the streets of London clean and offer a positive contribution in their neighbourhoods. Western students "adopt" a street they live on or near, and pledge to keep it free of litter for the academic year. Since the program began in 2010, about 60 Western students have volunteered each year. These students are rewarded with access to the Excellence in Leadership Award program, which allows them to log volunteer and leadership hours to work toward a certificate awarded at the end of the school year.

The annual Furniture Depot is Off-Campus Housing's response to help ease the amount of unwanted furniture left curbside when students move out of their rental accommodations at the end of each school year.

Completely free, students can drop off or pick up gently used furniture from two depot locations during the last week of April. These furniture depots receive about five shipping containers of reusable furniture each spring, which is a significant reduction in waste left on city streets. Additional dumpsters are also placed in high-density student areas to help keep garbage on the streets to a minimum.

A new addition to Off-Campus Housing's community outreach arsenal is Winter Houses. To promote snow and ice removal for the safety of tenants, visitors and postal delivery workers, Western student volunteers have offered to lend shovels to students living in their neighbourhood. A student can sign out a shovel from the designated Winter House in order to clear snow and ice from their rental property.
